Actually, it was more that Michael realised the only people from the North-East were Durham.
And also, it was changed because Bangor made noises about joining.
Nice to see y'all on Saturday, wish I hadn't had to drive so goddamned far, though!

Sorry Tom, the reason for the change was the inclusion of liverpool and lancaster, not that Only Durham is North-East. According to the old BUSA leagues, York, Sheffield, Bradford and Leeds were also North East...

IIRC, when I was originally e-mailing around to try to get interest in the league (around a year before it got going...) Stewart of UKSAA fame came up with the NEU bit... and when I was organising the first NEUAL indoor champs, I got the trophies engraved as NEU to prevent any problems in the long-term (I think!?!). At the time, the majority of clubs were considered to be in the North-East (as Michael says, including Bradford etc), but I had also invited Manchester, Liverpool and Lancaster to take part in the indoor champs, hoping that they'd get involved in the league over time, which would eventually result in a Northern England league instead.... and eventually it happened

I don't remember inventing the abbreviation NEU although I do remember send a barrage of emails to some of the unis that went on to form NEUAL in 2002.
That'll teach York to come to the SUSF champs. Michael ended up with a league to tun. Tee hee.
